Available Doesn’t Always Mean Suitable

When you’re short-staffed, it’s easy to focus on one thing:

Who can start?

And fair enough too. If someone has called in sick, a worker has left, or the workload has suddenly jumped, the immediate problem is the gap.

But just because someone is available doesn’t always mean they’re the right fit for the job.

That’s where recruitment can get tricky.

The First Available Person Isn’t Always the Best Person

Someone might have warehouse experience, but not the kind of warehouse experience your site needs.

They might have worked in production before, but not in a fast-paced environment.

They might be happy to start at 6:00am for a few days, but not really be suited to an early-start role long term.

None of that means there is anything wrong with the worker.

It just means the match may not be right.

And if the match isn’t right, chances are you are back looking for someone again a few days later.

The Small Things Make a Big Difference

A job title only tells you so much.

“Storeperson” can mean one thing in one workplace and something completely different somewhere else.

The same goes for labourers, production workers, forklift operators and plenty of other roles.

The pace of the site, the physical side of the job, the start time, the team, the type of machinery, whether there is overtime, whether the role is repetitive — all of these things matter.

That is why we ask questions.

The more we understand about the job, the better chance we have of finding someone who is not only available, but actually suited to it.

Fast Is Good. Right Is Better.

Of course, speed still matters.

When you need staff, you usually need them sooner rather than later.

But sending the first available person and hoping for the best can end up costing more time in the long run.

Another induction. More training. Another replacement. Another phone call.

Sometimes taking a little extra time upfront to get the match right saves a lot of frustration later.

We’re Not Just Filling a Spot

At CT Labour Hire & Recruitment, the aim is not simply to find someone with a pulse and an empty diary.

We want to understand what the job actually involves and what kind of person is likely to work well in it.

Because a successful placement is not just someone turning up on day one.

It is someone who can do the job, fits the environment and sticks around long enough to make a difference.

Available is handy. Suitable is better.
